Dear Program Directors:

We hope that you will share the following message and the enclosed flyer with your residents, particularly those who will be graduating in 2015.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital & MedStar Washington Hospital Center is excited to invite all interested EM residents to apply for our fellowship program in Primary Care Sports Medicine. We are officially ACGME accredited and will be participating in the next fellowship match. Our first fellow will be graduating in just a few weeks, and our second fellow starting in August, 2014.  We will be accepting our next round of applications from Emergency Physicians for this 1-year program to prepare the fellow for Board Certification in Sports Medicine starting in July, 2014. The attached brochure has more information on the application process and timeline.

This fellowship is the only Emergency Medicine based fellowship in Sports Medicine in the Mid-Atlantic, and we are extremely proud of the curriculum that we have developed.  Our program will draw upon the depth and breadth of experience of faculty in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Orthopedics and has the support of MedStar Sports Medicine - the recognized leader in medical care for athletes and active individuals in the Washington/Baltimore area.  In addition, our fellows will work closely with the faculty and fellows from other primary care sports medicine programs in the National Capital Region including the Uniformed Services University, Fairfax Family Medicine, and MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital.  These fellowship programs will come together for weekly didactics and ultrasound training.

Our fellow will have extensive experience in the clinic setting as well as in the athletic training room and on the sidelines for high school, collegiate, and professional athletic events.  In addition our fellow will participate in on-site medical care for several long-distance road races including 3 marathons. The fellow will function as an attending physician in one of the MedStar hospital Emergency Departments and will have the opportunity to teach medical students from Georgetown University School of Medicine as well as medical residents from Georgetown University Hospital / Washington Hospital Center EM Training Program.
