Dear Colleagues-
I am very happy to announce that we have been officially approved to offer an Emergency Medicine/Critical Care fellowship. The EM pathway will be part of the Anesthesia Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) training program. As such, it is fully ACGME accredited and trainees will be board eligible in Critical Care Medicine.
I have attached the EM/ACCM program requirements set by ABEM and the American Board of Anesthesia (ABA). Briefly, it is a 2 year program based in the care of critically ill and injured surgical patients. We are not yet certain of the exact number of positions that will be offered. There is at least one and hopefully there will be more. As you know, the standard ACCM fellowship is one year. The additional year is required for two main reasons. First of all, and I think most importantly, it is needed to ensure that EM graduates have the necessary exposure to surgical patients. While we have areas of skill and expertise that the anesthesia graduates do not have, anesthesia graduates spend their entire residency gaining exposure to surgical patients. In addition, this requirement creates a standard for the minimum number of PGY training years needed to be board eligible.
Unfortunately, there is little time to celebrate. Recently, almost all of the ACCM fellowships starting using the San Francisco Match. It is very similar to the residency match system. The application and interview period run through the fall and winter and match results are released at the end of May. For our EM residents, this means that if you are interested in fellowship training immediately after residency, you need to enter the match as a PGY-2. If you are a PGY-2 who is interested, there is still time but you should not delay any further. The timeline for the match for positions starting in July, 2015 is as follows:
Friday, November 1, 2013
•Applicant registration begins.
•Please note that although registration is open up until the rank list deadline, applicants are encouraged to register as early as possible to allow time for application and interviews.
Thursday, May 22, 2014 12:00 PM PST
•Match Deadline
•ALL rank lists must be submitted by 12:00 PM (noon) PST. After the deadline, rank list choices will be locked and no changes can be made.
Thursday, May 29, 2014
•Match Results
•Match results are made available to programs and applicants. Log in to your SF Match account to view match results.
Friday, May 30, 2014
•Any vacancies which remain after the match will be announced on the Immediate Vacancies page. Only programs which have indicated that they will accept applications for their unfilled positions will be listed. Contact programs directly to apply.
July 2015
•Critical Care Anesthesiology fellowship training begins.
For those of you that are interested, I encourage you to visit both the ABEM website as well as the SF match website for more information. On the ABEM site (www.abem.org) click "Subspecialty Certification" in the green menu on the left side of the page and then click "Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine" in the sub-menu that appears. The main SF match page is www.sfmatch.org. Click "Specialities" on the left side of the blue menu bar on top of the page. On the next page scroll down to fellowships and find "Critical Care Anesthesiology." This will bring up a chart. Click on the individual tabs on the chart to see more information on that subject. I have also attached a copy of the application. This is mean to be used only as a reference.
This fellowship is a testament to the wonderful care you provide everyday to the acutely ill and injured patients that present to our EDs. We all know, and have always known, the expansive training we receive in order to be able to take care of these patients- whether they be medical or surgical or anything in between. That being said, it is gratifying on both a personal and collective level to have this finally validated by the outside world. I need to formally recognize and thank Dr. Laureen Hill, the chair of the department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Joel Zivot, the ACCM fellowship program director, and Dianne Lee, the Anesthesia Fellowship Coordinator. They have been tireless advocates on our behalf. I could not have wished for more supportive colleagues. There would be no fellowship without their efforts. I also want to thank Dr. Shayne and Dr. Heilpern. It seems that they are always fighting for us in some way or another. Although we may have come to expect this behavior, it does not mean that we appreciate each individual battle any less.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns especially if you are a PGY-2 interested in applying. I'd be glad to help in any way that I can.
Thank you,
Ruthie
