Subject: PH Training for Emergency Medicine residency graduates
Dear Residency Program Director or Director of Medical Education:
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) would like your residents and medical students to know about its Public Health/Preventive Medicine Residency Program. Since 1959, this Program has trained physicians in health promotion and disease prevention at the population level; graduates have then served as leaders in public health practice, epidemiologic and clinical research and clinical preventive medicine. We are also recruiting for the Residency's Track in population-based Cancer Prevention and Control.
With the great increase in emergency preparedness activities at DOHMH, there are many opportunities of special interest to the Emergency Medicine specialist, including resource planning for pandemic influenza; handling calls from EDs, and developing protocols for biological, chemical and radiological agent exposures.
The Residency Program consists of two years of training: residents rotate through various programs at the health department and its clinical sites while earning a Master of Public Health degree. The Program leads to Board Eligibility in public health/general preventive medicine. Participants receive stipends, health insurance, conference allowance and full tuition for the MPH degree.
Although only one year of post-graduate clinical training is required by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, many applicants have completed a clinical residency or subspecialty training, and thus your residents may want to consider this as the next step in their career development.
One year of post-graduate clinical training is required (eleven months of direct patient care) for preventive medicine residency entry. Applicants to this Program must obtain a full, unrestricted New York State license by the start of the Residency; therefore, it will be necessary for the applicant to have received notification of having passed Step 3 by the time of applicant selection in late winter/early spring and to possess U.S. work eligibility. (As you may recall, New York State requires three years of clinical training for licensure for international medical graduates.) Information on the Residency and the application process is contained in the attached brochure (first attachment - a double-sided, folded brochure) or on our website.
There are limited opportunities for an elective in public health for residents and medical students. (See the second attached brochure - a double-sided, tri-folded brochure).
We would appreciate your making this message and the attached brochures available to your residents and students, who are encouraged to contact the Program at healthrp@health.nyc.gov or at 347-396-2914 for more information.
Thank you in advance for your assistance,
Andrea Lyman, MD, MSc, MS
