BETH ISRAEL DEACONESS MEDICAL CENTER
GLOBAL HEALTH AND INTERNATIONAL EMERGENCY MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's (BIDMC) Department of Emergency Medicine is now accepting applications for its Global Health and International Emergency Medicine Fellowship. This two-year fellowship includes an MPH degree at the Harvard School of Public Health as well as international field work in conjunction with the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. BIDMC's faculty include experts in disaster response, emergency medicine systems and humanitarian response.
Fellowship outline:
1) Masters of Public Health Degree
For fellows who do not already have a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree, the Fellowship will include an MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health. Coursework for the degree will be taken throughout the two-year Fellowship and will occur concurrently with clinical shifts, other academic courses and field experience abroad.
2) Fieldwork
Fieldwork is arranged by the Fellow and supervised by the Fellowship director and will be in conjunction with the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (http://hhi.harvard.edu/). Fellows should take a leadership role during field placements with each experience designed to increase their knowledge base and to practice acquired skills.
3) Additional Coursework
There are a number of conferences available to the fellow throughout the year, including:
a) Health Emergencies in Large Populations (H.E.L.P.) course offered by the International Committee of the Red Cross. This two week, hands-on course prepares fellows to professionally respond to humanitarian crises.
b) Humanitarian Studies Initiative (HSI) course offered by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative is a two-week course focused on disaster and humanitarian crisis response including a three-day field simulation experience.
c) Courses are also available at the Burnett Institute, a leader in international field research and methodologies for one to two weeks during the fellowship. Although a number of great courses are offered at the Institute, the recommended course is "Field Methods for International Health Planning and Evaluation."
d) International Emergency Development Leadership Institute (IEDLI) will provide Fellows with the knowledge and skill set to build emergency departments and emergency systems internationally.
4) Clinical Work
Fellows will work clinically at one of BIDMC's affiliate hospitals and will supervise residents during clinical shifts. BIDMC is a level I trauma center and a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School (HMS). Its emergency department has an annual volume of approximately 55,000 visits per year. On average, Fellows will work eight shifts per month over the course of a year. Fellows will have a clinical appointment at BIDMC and an academic appointment at HMS.
5) Research
Each Fellow will be required to complete at least one research project of sufficient quality for peer-review publication.
