The Medical Toxicology Fellowship at Wayne State University-Detroit Medical Center has an opening for July 2014. This is a two-year fully accredited fellowship leading to board certification.
The program offers a comprehensive education in medical toxicology with heavy emphasis on clinical training and teaching. Research is available and since Medical Toxicology is a division of a strong research committed academic Emergency Medicine Department, those resources are available to the fellow. The core Toxicology faculty includes seven clinically active board certified medical and clinical toxicologists. The fellowship program is situated at the Michigan Regional Poison Control Center and the Detroit Medical Center. The DMC is a consortium of 8 university–based tertiary care hospitals providing a large and variable patient population.
The Michigan Regional Poison Center is the only Poison Center in the state and one of the larger AAPCC-certified Poison Centers nationally. The Poison Center fields approximately 80.000 calls per year from a population of 10 million individuals. Fellows provide medical backup for critical Poison Center calls and participate in approximately 500 bedside consultations annually within the DMC ensuring exposure to a diversified patient experience. The Detroit Medical Center is the regional Level I Trauma Center, Burn Center, and Hyperbaric Unit referral site. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan is the regional trauma center, burn center and comprehensive tertiary care referral site for pediatric patients. Fellows receive specialty training in pharmacokinetics, Advanced Hazmat Life Support, and radiation medicine through REAC/Ts.
Detroit is a diverse city which has an increasing array of cultural activities. There are numerous housing opportunities ranging from urban to rural within a 45 minute driving radius. The central Wayne State University campus area is growing and this portion of the city offers multiple educational, social, and cultural activities. Excellent schools are available. Downtown Detroit is in the midst of gentrification and offers many cultural activities including professional sports, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Institute of Art, and many excellent ethnic restaurants. Dearborn is 25 minutes from downtown, the Ann Arbor university community is within 45 minutes, and the beautiful Upper Peninsular and Great Lakes are close by affording ample recreational activities.
The fellow is compensated at the PGY 4 or 5 level of training. Benefits are provided. Opportunities exist for EM/PEM shifts but are not required. Please address inquiries to Dr. Cynthia Aaron or Dr. Matthew Hedge at:
