Subject: University Hospitals Case Medical Center - New Fellowship in International Emergency Medicine
The Case Western Reserve University/International Medical Corps Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship is now accepting applications for its first fellow to start in July, 2014. This unique and exciting fellowship will be offered through the Department of Emergency Medicine at University Hospitals/Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio starting in July, 2014.
The fellowship will train future professional career international emergency medicine relief physicians in the skillsets needed to be leaders in the field of emergency response and international development, including:
• Construction of field hospitals and labs in challenging environments
• Performing needs assessments and epidemiologic surveys in challenging environments
• Basics of Communicable diseases and outbreak management
• Issues with Refugee and Internally Displaced populations
• Basics of Security
• Basics of Water/Sanitation
• Basics of Logistics
• Basics of Nutrition
• Grant writing
• Ethical issues in the field
• And more…
This unique fellowship has been created in collaboration with International Medical Corps (www.imcworldwide.org), an internationally recognized and respected humanitarian, non-profit organization specializing in training, medical relief, and development programs in over 30 countries and has over 25 years of experience in the field. The two-year fellowship provides 5 months of overseas time at International Medical Corps field sites, as well as a longitudinal Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree with a Global Health concentration through the Department of Epidemiology and Bio-statistics at Case Western Reserve University. The fellow will assume a junior faculty position in the University Hospitals/Case Medical Center Emergency Medicine Department and will participate in teaching residents the Emergency Medicine Residency Program.
The ultimate goal of the fellowship is to provide the fellow the skills not only in field work, but also in research, ethics, critical thinking and statistical methodology that can be used for the rest of his or her career to approach the rigors of field work with the mind of a physician-scientist, and the heart and hands of a global citizen.
